Day 22 – Eradicating Malaria World-Wide

Malaria is one of the most severe public health problems worldwide. It is a leading cause of death and disease in many developing countries, where young children and pregnant women are the most affected. The costs of malaria – to individuals, families, communities, nations – are enormous. CDC

In 2018, an estimated 405,000 people died of malaria. The WHO African Region carries a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. The region was home to 93% of malaria cases and 94% of malaria deaths.

Interventions have saved millions of lives globally and cut malaria mortality by 25% from 2010 to 2016, leading to hopes and plans for elimination and ultimately eradication. The World Health Organization has developed a framework for malaria elimination, which is free for download.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has contributed significantly toward the eradication of this disease. They list a number of in-country partners they work with and donate to. GiveWell recommends Against Malaria Foundation (AMF).

We protect people from malaria. We fund nets and ensure they are distributed and used. We show you where the nets go. We monitor and report their use and impact. AMF has distributed over 100 million nets to date.
