Around the world, 821 million people do not have enough of the food they need to live an active, healthy life. One in every nine people goes to bed hungry each night.
Hunger and malnutrition are the biggest risks to health worldwide – greater than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Globally, food deprivation still claims a child’s life every three seconds and nearly half of all deaths in children under 5 are attributable to undernutrition.
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, food insecurity has increased in the United States. This is particularly true for households with young children. Food insecurity in households with children under 18 has increased by about 130 percent from 2018 to today. 34.5 percent of households with a child 18 and under were food insecure as of late April 2020.
Childhood hunger is one of the most urgent and important causes that there is. When you’re suffering from hunger, there is little else that can occupy your attention. There is no chance for equality or opportunity when one lacks the necessary nutrition to live.
